Chief Jim Kerr
Chief James Kerr serves as the Chief of Police for the Petersburg Police Department in Petersburg, Alaska, where he oversees patrol operations, E-911 dispatch services, and the community jail. With more than two decades in law enforcement, Chief Kerr has developed extensive experience in rural and municipal policing, emphasizing collaborative leadership, fiscal responsibility, and strong community partnerships in Southeast Alaska.
Throughout his career, Chief Kerr has held progressive roles in patrol, investigations, and supervision, ultimately advancing to Chief. His leadership focuses on enhancing officer professionalism, improving public-safety technology, and strengthening interagency coordination among police, fire, EMS, and emergency communications providers. He has been actively involved in policy discussions and strategic planning related to service-area public safety funding, rural policing challenges, and modernization of public-safety operations.
