Bethel Police Department

Police Officer


Under the general supervision of a superior officer. Performs law enforcement duties, to protect and safeguard life and property, to prevent crime, apprehend criminals, and to preserve peace.

Patrols the city in a police cruiser and investigates any suspicious conditions, makes arrest for violations of laws and ordinances. Enforces traffic laws and directs traffic as required. Conducts thorough and complete investigations of crimes and traffic accidents and patrols on foot when necessary. Provides detailed written reports and performs related work as required.

Job Requirements

Must have a high school diploma, previous police academy experience and relevant police experience.

Must meet minimum standards of Alaska Police Standards Council for Police Officers;

Must be at least 21 years old;

Must have no felony or serious misdemeanor convictions;

Must be a U. S. citizen or resident alien;

Must be able to observe situations analytically and objectively and to record them clearly and completely;

Must be able to react quickly and calmly in emergencies;

Must be able to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.;

Must be able to handle situations firmly, courteously, tactfully and impartially;

Must be able to develop skill in the use and care of firearms;

Must have good physical strength and agility.

The application process will include a fully completed City of Bethel Application for Employment, APSC F-3, background investigation and any other testing required to meet APSC standards.


From July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013: Police Officer's salary range starts at $44,297 ($21.30/hr) to $59,370 ($28.54/hr) DOE, with a 5% raise after probation.

6% night shift differential

12 hour shifts. 4 on/3 off, 3 on/4 off.

Relocation costs and housing allowance assistance.

Uniforms and equipment provided with the exception of boots.
