Chief Lonnie Hatman was born, raised, and graduated from High School (East High) in Aurora, Illinois, 30 miles west of Chicago. He began his law enforcement career in 1980 with the Waubonsee Community College Police Department in Sugar Grove, Illinois where he earned an A.A.S. Degree in Criminal Justice. He transferred to the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1982 and worked for UAF Security (now UAF Police) until June of 1983 when he was hired by the City of North Pole. He received a B.A. in Criminal Justice from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1989. He has completed 9 semester hours towards a M.P.A. degree.

Chief Hatman was promoted to Sergeant in 1995. He attended the 191st session of the FBI National Academy in 1997 and was appointed Chief of Police in May of 1999.

The Chief holds Advanced and Instructor Certifications from the Alaska Police Standards Council. He has conducted training courses for over 2000 Alaskan Police Officers in a variety of subjects. He has also conducted numerous informational and training sessions for schools, community groups, and military members new to Alaska, as well as social service groups, and the North Pole Police Department Citizens Police Academy.  He has taught as an adjunct instructor for the University of Alaska Fairbanks Tanana Valley Campus Law Enforcement Academy and at the State of Alaska, Department of Public Safety Training Academy as an instructor in DWI Detection, Standardized Field Sobriety Testing and Alcohol Breath Testing. 

He is a member of the American Society for Law Enforcement Training, Alaska Association of Chiefs of Police, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, and President of the Farthest North Chapter of the Alaska Peace Officers Association.

Chief Hatman enjoys reading, motorcycle riding, hiking, backpacking and spending time with his family.
