Deputy Chief Maki began his career at the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office in Littleton, Colorado, starting as a detention officer in 1973. He was promoted to patrol a month later. 

He spent most of his career in Patrol, but worked in the jail and in communications as a sergeant.  In 1980, he was promoted to Lieutenant in patrol.  He commanded a multi-jurisdictional drug Task Force for 4 years, was the deputy commander in Investigations for 2 years.  Returning to Patrol, ran the DUI enforcement program and SWAT team as well as having a patrol team.

He retired in Feb 2000, to command the Colorado Sheriff's Training Institute, a police academy, but still served as an unpaid deputy with Arapahoe County .  During the five years he was there, he ran both day and evening classes and averaged graduating 120 students a year.  He has taught Ethics, Law, Search and Seizure and other subjects in Police Academies for over 30 years.

He has a BA in Criminal Justice and Criminology and graduated from Northwestern University 's Traffic Institute, School of Police Staff and Command.

While looking for vacation property in SE Alaska , he came across the City of Ketchikan 's website where he found they were seeking a deputy chief.  He has been the deputy chief since April 2005.

Deputy Chief Maki is married to Suzanne who works for Ketchikan General Hospital as assistant to the CEO.  They have five grandchildren - all boys.  Hobbies include fishing, hunting and riding his BMW K1200Lt motorcycle (in the rain).
