Part-time Police Officer or Split-duty Police Officer

Salary: $20.00-$25.00 hourly, DOQ, Immediate opening, closing date July 1, 08.
Requirements: Age 21, a HS diploma or GED, honorable discharge (veterans), AK or out-of-state police certification or have been honorably separated within past 10 years as a commissioned law enforcement officer of a state or federal government if previously served with a POST agency; pass a physical examination & psychological exam, negative drug screen and pass a thorough background investigation, be drug-free and complete 6-month city probationary period.
Part-time: Work two days per week/ 8-hours per shift/ on-call during 48-hour period.
Split-duty: Work two days/ 8-hours per shift/ on call during that 48 hour period and work remaining time up to 40 hours total per week at another city department where qualified to work, such as public works. This position includes AK PERS pension plan, health insurance with family plan option and liberal vacation days, plus a raise after 6 months.
*Note: Part-time or split-duty position is intended for eventual conversion to a full-time officer position. A full-time officer must complete the AK Law Enforcement Training (ALET) mandated by AK Police Standards Commission (APSC) within one year of full-time employment and sign a 2-year contract.
Other benefits: Personally-assigned take-home vehicle, equipment and initial training provided. Position may be combined with another non-law enforcement city position to balance out 40 hours a week, with AK PERS pension and insurance benefits, depending on qualifications. Position is being considered for expansion to full-time police position.
Must complete an APSC personal history statement, APSC medical history form and city application and waiver and be interviewed.
Applicant must be able to work in extreme weather (-60F in winter), be able to complete initial training, pistol and shotgun qualification, 40-hour AK FTO program and be able to work in a remote interior AK village that is not on the road system with limited back up and little supervision. Applicant must be of good moral character and have good human relation skills. Specialized training, EMT, rural AK police experience and college are desired.
