
Dennis R. Spurrier, Chief of the Skagway Police Department began his law enforcement career in December 1975 as a Public Safety Officer with the University of Alaska, Anchorage Department of Public Safety. He attended the 13th Municipal Police Academy located in Sitka, Alaska. During his years of service at U.A.A. he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and later appointed as Lieutenant.
Chief Spurrier moved to Skagway after accepting a Police Officers Position in December of 1978.
Chief Spurrier is an Alaska Certified EMT I, holds an Advanced Police Certification with the Alaska Police Standards as well as Instructor Certificates in the areas of Firearms, Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement, Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (E.V.O.C.), Fingerprinting and Basic Level Police Sniper, to name a few. He is a member of the International Association of Chief’s of Police, Alaska Association of Chief’s of Police, Alaska Peace Officer’s Association and the American Sniper Association.
Chief Spurrier will be retiring from his police career the end of June, 2004 and will be going to work for the Department of Homeland Security – U.S. Customs and Border Protection. He will have 21 years of police service upon his retirement with eight of those years as the Chief of Police in Skagway.
