Chief Special Agent Daniel Frerich grew up in Whitefish, Montana . He joined the Air Force in 1975 as Security Policeman and obtained an Associates Degree in Administration of Justice. In 1980 CSA Frerich attended the Air Force Office of Special Investigations Academy in Washington DC and was a Special Agent with OSI from 1980-2003.

In 1981 CSA Frerich came to Alaska with OSI and decided this was where he wanted to stay. After leaving active duty he chose to stay in the Air Force Reserves as a special agent until he retired in 2003. In 1987 he was hired by the Bristol Bay Borough Police Department and attended the A.L.E.T. Academy #4 in Sitka .

In 1988 CSA Frerich took a position with the Alaska Division of Occupational Licensing where he worked as the investigator for the Big Game Commercial Services Board

In 1990, CSA Frerich was hired by the Alaska Railroad as a Special Agent and was promoted to Chief in 1992. The six person department has four special agents who hold special commissions with DPS. In addition to patrol, agents are trained in investigations for railroad collisions and homeland security matters involving rail operations and port security.

CSA Frerich is an active member of the Anchorage Chapter of the Alaska Peace Officers Association and has been president of the chapter since 2004. He is also a member of the Alaska Association of Chiefs of Police.
