Deputy Chief Johnson grew up in Boise, Idaho . He attended the University of Idaho in Moscow , Idaho and during those four years obtained experience as a District Court Marshal, Deputy Sheriff and reserve officer, eventually obtaining the rank of Captain and commanding the 10 member reserve unit of the Moscow Police Department. In 1983, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Regular Army as a Distinguished Military Graduate and scholarship student in ROTC.

During the next ten years Deputy Chief Johnson served on active duty at vario us locations in Germany , Alabama and Colorado , eventually landing at Fort Wainwright , AK as the Deputy Provost Marshal for the 6 th Infantry Division (Light). At this mid-point in his career, Brad decided to leave active duty and return to civilian law enforcement to pursue a career. He was hired by the Fairbanks Police Department in 1993 as a patrol officer. Later that year, he was selected for duty with the department’s Tactical Police Team (TPT) and was promoted to Sergeant in 1995.

During the next ten years, Deputy Chief Johnson performed varying duties including FTO, patrol supervisor, Administrative Sergeant, and Operations Sergeant on the TPT. In March, 2005 he was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned as the Deputy Chief of Police. He is a member of the Alaska Association of Chiefs of Police, International Association of Chiefs of Police, Alaska Peace Officers Association, and the National Tactical Officers Association. Deputy Chief Johnson is a founding member of the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center - NW (NLECTC-NW) Regional Advisory Council where he serves as the Chairperson, and serves on the national Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Advisory Council for the National Institute of J us tice.

Deputy Chief Johnson is married to Stephanie Johnson, who is a Dispatch Supervisor with the Fairbanks Police Department, and has four children: Ashley, Jesse, Craig and Kristen. He enjoys recreational activities such as fishing and SCUBA diving and is an avid sports fan, having attended his first NASCAR race (Las Vegas) and professional football game (his beloved Steelers) during the past year.
